Soaring Rhetoric: BC Spring Football, the Future, and the NFL Draft

Joe: Tearing shirts off in flag football is the kind of intensity we need (though that might get you a holding call). Don Brown would probably like the cut of your proverbial jib. Have you tried out as a walk-on?

On the 2013 recruits, it’s hard to say, because I think a lot of them are going to redshirt. In fact, I can’t think of a single one right now, regardless of how talented, that I can look at and say “this kid’s going to play as a true freshman.” Part of that has to do with Addazio and not knowing what to expect from him. Spaz burned tons of redshirts, but that might not be the way things work here anymore.

It’s possible that a few won’t, because BC does have some holes and depth will be required. Do you see any of these kids playing in September?

Kyle: You know I tried as a walk-on but I couldn’t really grow a mustache this Fall (failed Spaz joke).

Joe: A for effort.

Kyle: Anyway, very, very true point. Considering the quality of this recruiting class, the only guy I think that gets played is Florida transfer Matt Patchan (of course, only if he is healthy, which has not been a guarantee in his career).

Joe: Since we’re looking ahead, let’s talk 2014 for a minute. Had the spring game been played, I expected to see a competition for the 2nd quarterback spot, which would get us ready for the quarterback competition next season. I’ve gotta be honest, Kyle, I’ve been kind of apprehensive thinking about it, because after Rettig, we’ve got some known quantities of which I’m not fond and lots of unknown quantities. The good news is that BC has recruited quarterbacks this year and for next year, so the obvious question is this: do you think Rettig’s 2014 replacement is amongst these recruiting classes? Please say yes.

Kyle: Yes, I really do think we have some replacements for Rettig coming up. Whether it will be 2013 prospect James Walsh, or 2014’s Darius Wade, or a guy we haven’t seen, yet there will definitely be SOMEONE. But, contrary to popular belief it will not be Bordner. He has been basically played as a Human Victory Cigar and in those appearances, playing the Tim Tebow role, he has not fared so well. There is going to be a dual-threat QB unless Addazio gets a can’t-miss pro-style recruit out there.

Joe: I’m not sure why the popular belief has been Bordner; maybe because he’s the backup. Whatever the case — and I’m sorry, I’m just keeping it real — I’m not that impressed with him. Hopefully nobody brings up the spring game last year, because I’ve seen several mediocre Division I quarterbacks have good spring games. To be frank, I would rather BC starts grooming the new guy in 2014 and take their lumps with a young quarterback than waste a year on a one-year starter who hasn’t shown us much.

But back to Rettig, what kind of final year do you think he’ll have?
