101 Days of BC Football: Christian Suntrup, #13

When Christian Suntrup came to Boston College, it seemed clear that this would someday be his team to lead. This pro-style quarterback from Missouri was rated at three-stars as a recruit and as the fifth-best in his state. Nobody knew when the Suntrup era would begin, except that it would, and when it did, he’d be the next big thing.

His redshirt year has ended, and he’ll be a RS freshman in 2012. Unfortunately, we don’t even know where for certain on the depth chart he is at quarterback, aside from not being on the two-deep. Really all we’ve seen of Suntrup was at the 2012 spring game on March 31, where despite the fact that Dave Shinskie and Mike Marscovetra have already been abandoned as viable quarterback alternatives, each saw more snaps than he did.

About all one can make of that is Suntrup’s status on the theoretical five-deep BC depth chart — he’s fifth. For reasons already mentioned, that’s probably not good news. There was not much anyone could glean from how he played in that game, and it’s wise not to go crazy over a spring football scrimmage, but it was a forgettable performance (and I literally had forgotten until I looked at my notes). I didn’t even have many notes to begin with, but one would figure that if they wanted to get Suntrup work, they’d have gotten him more than a few snaps.

I would have honestly liked to see more playing time for Suntrup in that spring game, even though it was just an exhibition. He may be a future quarterback for this team or he may not, but snaps are wasted on a few of the other guys at this position. There wouldn’t have been much harm in letting him play a little more, but I don’t make those decisions.

Regardless, Suntrup should not be written off by anybody based upon a few hit-or-miss plays in a scrimmage, or even the fact that he’s apparently a fifth-string quarterback right now. Bordner started last season as the #4 quarterback and now he’s not far from starting, so you never know how perceptions may change in a year.
