101 Days of BC Football: Shane Cranmore, #9

At Boston College, the Shane Cranmore file is pretty empty. Entering his sophomore year, this quarterback has yet to appear in a game for the Eagles, and was not even given a scholarship by BC — he joined the team as a “recruited walk-on.”

There are a few things we do know about this Connecticut native, though. The first is that he does have a history with serious injuries. Cranmore was not offered a scholarship anywhere, nor did he play his senior high school season, because he tore his ACL. Boston College did pick him up as a walk-on, where he’s not even on the depth chart at quarterback.

The second thing we know is that he participated in the 2011 Jay McGilis Spring Game and despite a serious lack of playing time, actually managed to get himself noticed by Eagles fans for a nice performance that day.

The third and final thing we know about Shane Cranmore is that he played again in the 2012 spring game — as a defensive back. BC’s secondary was so decimated that Cranmore and backup kicker Joey Launceford were in the backfield throughout the scrimmage season.

No offense is intended to Cranmore, but one would hope that our regular starting secondary is ready to go in time for the start of the season, and that they are able to play the entire year without incident. If Cranmore sees any time in the defensive backfield whatsoever during the 2012 season, you may feel free to assume that BC is in serious trouble.

It’s entirely possible that Cranmore’s playing time during the spring was just to fill in and he won’t be assuming that role in the fall. At the same time, it speaks to how little depth BC has. Again, this is not a problem with Cranmore, rather an issue with this team’s roster construction.

Who knows what, if anything, we will see from Cranmore this year, but I would not assume much.
