Wake Forest 27, BC 19: Trainwreck resumed

Before I even get into analyzing this game, let me first offer congratulations to Montel Harris who today became Boston College’s all-time rushing yards leader.

Now then, to the misery that is Boston College football. The Eagles fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at home, 27-19, in Week 5. The win brings the Deacs up to a surprising 3-1 (2-0) mark, while the Eagles are 1-4 (0-2) and are all but swirling the bowl.

Boston College played anywhere between below average and horrible in quarters one, two, and three. Wake Forest had 220 offensive yards in the first half and predictably carved up the Eagles’ cushion. Not only that, but Josh Harris was doing well on the ground and allowed Wake Forest to break off good plays. Though the game never truly got out of reach, with the way the Deacs were able to move the football, it felt like it was at times.

Finally, in the fourth quarter, the Eagles showed some life and got into the end zone. They narrowed the gap again to five, but once Wake got the ball back, on a third down deep in their own territory, they went up for a big gain, and then on the next play, went up for ANOTHER big gain. The Deacs didn’t punch it in the end zone, Boston College did nothing on their ensuing possession and lost by 8.

Here were my main problems with this game:

• Two personal fouls in the first quarter. Coleman and Fletcher completely needlessly cost their team 30 yards in the opening frame. Even if it doesn’t lead to a score, it changes the field position game, and it’s a sign of an undisciplined team.

• Offensive line still terrible. Wake Forest came into this game with 2 sacks in 3 games, and they were chasing Rettig all over the place. If you’re shuddering to think what Clemson will do to them next week, you’re right to, and if you aren’t, you should be. Chase Rettig is a talented quarterback who is being inhibited (in part) by his offensive line.

• Clock management. Once again, Frank Spaziani puts his incompetence on grand display with odd use of timeouts.

• Cushion was cushiony. Wake passed for 292 yards as a team and had 392 yards of offense. They went 20/30 in completions.

The Eagles played one decent quarter, but that doesn’t make up for the three bad ones, just like playing one decent game against UMass couldn’t make up for the three bad ones — make it four now.

With the Eagles at 1-4, we have to look objectively and realistically about where this team is going. Boston College has gone 1-4 through the EASY part of their schedule. Next week, they’re going to Clemson, which looks like a virtually-certain loss. It doesn’t get easier from there, either. To be perfectly frank, I think this team is well on its way to a 10-loss season.

This is getting old because Boston College is making the same sorts of errors every single week. There are very few signs of life coming from this team, and it’s going to get worse before it gets better. It is well past time for Boston College to #FireSpaz.
